Where did April go? After looking at pictures that I took from the start of the
month, the golf course has come a long way in healing…….. although in my mind it
can not happen fast enough. The areas that received the most damage have been
seeded and we are now waiting for the soil to warm up enough for the seed to germinate.
Most grass seed does not germinate until the soil is consistently above 50 degrees
Fahrenheit. Once we reach this magical number things should progress quickly. I remind everybody that although the playing conditions are not optimal, the
grass that we lost is considered a weed, called Poa Annua. Over time this will make
for a better stand of grass on the golf course.
I am sure that everybody has noticed the construction project located on the
right side of 16 fairway. This is the future sight of our sod nursery. With a little additonal
grading it will be ready for seed. Even under the best conditions we will not be
able to harvest sod until next year. Once the sod nursery is established we can start
on some projects. One project that comes to mind is the leveling of the tile lines in
the fairways.
Now that May is here I am sure spring rains will follow. With wet conditions it
is vital to use good etiquette with your golf carts. Use cart paths when they are available,
follow directional signs when provided, and try to stay out of sloppy or muddy
areas. As we have done in previous years, orange flags will mark wet areas to keep
carts out. I will also be implementing halos around greens. To preserve the health
and playing conditions around the greens, please keep carts outside of the halos.
I look forward to seeing everybody on the golf course.
