What happened to global warming? We broke a fourteen year old record last month when the mercury dipped to 27 degrees below zero. The extreme cold and the abundant snow on the golf course has made it very difficult to get onto the golf course to trim trees. On the other hand, the snow is a wonderful blanket insulating the grass from the dangerous temperatures. Unfortunately, the latest windstorm has blown sections of snow off of our greens, leaving small areas of turf unprotected. These unprotected areas may receive some damage but we will have to wait until spring to see.
Because of the difficulty of getting onto the golf course we have been busy in the shop going through equipment – sharpening reels – and of course moving snow.
I have just returned from the annual Iowa Turfgrass Conference in Des Moines. It is always interesting to talk to other superintendents and vendors to find out what is new in the industry, what worked and did not work on their golf courses. It was a good show this year and I am anxious to try out some of the ideas that I picked up.
For the time being think warm thoughts. Mild weather would certainly help us get projects done on the golf course. Until next month…...
