Golf Course News - 7/1/2008

June started off on a sour note. Not only did we have the water to contend with, but our dump truck was stolen! The truck has since been recovered and is in the shop being repaired. All things considered, very little damage was done and the truck should be back in action very soon. Although this is the first time we have had problems down at the maintenance shop, it goes to show that nobody is safe. I ask everybody to pay attention to the activities that happen at the golf course and to take action if needed. No, I do not mean wrestling bad guys, but instead, picking up the pone and calling the appropriate people if deemed necessary.

It is hard to believe that we started out the month with more water than we knew what to do with, and now we are burning up. It sure would be nice if we could spread that rain out over the entire month. All of the water that we received has made for one incredible mosquito population. The signs of bug spray being applied are all over the golf course. The two green patches (shaped like feet) where the applicator stood, surrounded by brown grass is a dead giveaway. I remind everybody to apply insect repellent on cart paths or, at the very least, out in the rough.

Although we had plenty of water at the start of the month, the last couple of weeks have tested our irrigation system. Although this is the first real test, things are running pretty well (knock on wood). The lack of moisture has started to send our turf into summer dormancy. This is the natural defense of the grass to combat lack of moisture. During this stage growth is reduced, which does not allow it to recover from cart and golf traffic. So, I once again remind everybody to avoid stressed areas and to follow the halos.

I thank everybody for their cooperation and understanding during the times of wetness at the first of the month. The crew and I are always doing everything we can to get you out and playing as soon as possible, but Mother Nature makes the ultimate decision.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize my crew. They are a great bunch of guys that truly care about Fort Dodge Country Club. Without their passion and hard work we would not be able to have the superior playing conditions that we do. Their passion about the quality and condition of the golf course is not something that can be taught. It is the sign of a great employee.

As always, I hope to see you on the golf course.
