Golf Course Update - 11/01/2007

It continues to amaze me how quickly the leaves react when the calendar says Fall.
That is right, it is that time of year again. We are spending a good portion of each workday
picking up, blowing and mulching leaves on the golf course. At times, it seems never ending.
From what I can see under the blanket of leaves, the golf course seems to be in very good
shape for this time of year. We have had a nice stretch of wet weather over the past couple
of months that has set the turf up nicely for Winter. Hopefully, winter weather is still a few
weeks away.

This is also the time of year when I spend a lot of time watching the extended forecast.
I like to keep the irrigation system charged and the golf course open as late as possible. As
long as the temperatures stay around the average for this time of year we are fine. If we get
a big cold snap we need to blow out the irrigation system quickly and the end of the golf season
is usually shortly thereafter. That could be in the first week of November or Christmas
Day. It is impossible to predict. After all, this is Iowa, where there is no such thing as normal
weather.

Anyone who has entered the Fort Dodge Country Club parking lot over the past month
has noticed that our circular planter was involved in a traffic accident (and lost!) This is not
the first car-to-planter accident that we have experienced, but it was the most severe. After
discussing options with the Board and Beautification Committee, we have decided to remove
the planter from it’s existing location. The plan is to spend time and money on renovating the
entry sign in the median between 2nd Avenue South and Country Club Drive.

We have had a great golf season this year. I am sure that there will be more good days
to enjoy Fort Dodge Country Club. I hope to see you out here.
