Golf Course News - 9/01/2007

As I sit down to writie this newsletter, the only two things that come to mind
are rain and the Iowa Open. It seems the past month has been filled with rain. Normally,
I consider that a good thing, but this month we had “a little” too much. I believe
the rain gauge near the maintenance shop has had over 14 inches dumped out
of it this month alone.

Obviously that is an incredible amount of water. The golf course sits on 140
acres. One seven day period we had a foot of rain. A cubic foot is equivalent to approximately
8 gallons of water. That means that we had 48,787,200 gallons of water
fall on our golf course in one week. As a reference, the irrigation system uses about
15, 000,000 gallons of city water each year. If only we could sell all of our excess
back to the city.

The wet weather was a big challenge in preparing the course for play. With
some extraordinary efforts from my staff, we were able to get the golf course back
into very good shape for the Iowa Open. Players from all over the state were here to
play in the Iowa Open and everyone I talked to raved about the condition of the
course. Many said that these were the best greens that they had played on all year.
Of course, that is always nice to hear.

Lastly I would like to thank the membership for their kind words and understanding
during the period when we had to close the golf course. I would like to
thank my staff for all of their hard work over the past couple of weeks, and I would
like to thank the members who volunteered to help out with anything they could.
I am looking forward to a great month of September. I hope to see you out enjoying
the golf course.
