Technically, we have been open for over a month now. Unfortunately, the reality of the
matter is that we have not had much for golf weather. A few warm Spring days have been
scattered in with some stretches of unseasonably cold weather and rain events. Now that
May is here, I hope that the trend will shift toward warmer weather with a little less rain.
The turf on the golf course is loving the plentiful moisture that Mother Nature has been
providing. I often say that we would have bigger problems if grass was not growing; but
right now I selfishly would like it to slow down so we could catch up. On a brighter note, we
have completed the aerification of our greens. I was so excited to tell you about my planned
trip to Augusta for The Masters that I neglected to mention in last month’s newsletter that we
had planned an aerification for the 23rd and 24th of April.
We used 1/2 “ solid tines to poke holes 6" to 7" deep into our greens. This process
does a lot to improve drainage, root development, gas exchange and relieve compaction. Our
greens will be more healthy throughout the year as a result of the aerification. The holes created
in this process are very small. Heavy rains immediately followed the aerification and
have really helped the greens heal up quickly. It will not be long until we have the greens
back to normal.
May is the time of year that our golf season really gets going. We will start to host golf
outings this month, and the men’s and women’s golf associations will begin their activities. I
look forward to seeing a lot of our members out here enjoying the golf course. Of course,
with an increase in play and some wet conditions, it is even more important to use good etiquette
with your golf carts. Use cart paths when they are available, follow directional signs
when provided and try to stay out of sloppy or muddy areas.
